Early Life & Biography

Jennifer Michelle Goodwin was born on May 22, 1978, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her mother, Linda (née Kantor) Goodwin, is a former teacher who also worked for FedEx and later Apple; her father, Tim Goodwin, was the owner of a recording studio. She has a younger sister, Melissa Goodwin, who is a stop-motion animator known for her work on Robot Chicken and SuperMansion.

Goodwin was raised in both Jewish and Protestant traditions attending both Temple Israel and the First Unitarian Church in Memphis, being baptized and also studying for her Bat Mitzvah. She spent summers at the Henry S. Jacobs Camp (run by the Union for Reform Judaism). She attended St. Mary’s Episcopal School and Lausanne Collegiate School, graduating in 1996. After high school, she began studying theatre at Hanover College before transferring to Boston

University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors and received the Bette Davis Foundation’s Excellence in Acting: Professional Promise Award. She later studied at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon and earned an Acting Shakespeare Certificate from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She changed the spelling of her name from Jennifer to Ginnifer to reflect the Southern pronunciation of the name as she grew up hearing it.

In her 30s, she publicly returned to Judaism after a period away from her faith, stating: “I was a Jew by birth, and now I’m a Jew by choice.” She began dating Once Upon a Time co-star Josh Dallas in late 2011; they became engaged in October 2013 and married on April 12, 2014. They have two sons: Oliver Finlay Dallas (born May 29, 2014) and Hugo Wilson Dallas (born June 1, 2016). The family lives in Encino, California.
