Early Life & Biography

Sheryl Lynn Lee was born on April 22, 1967, in Augsburg, Bavaria, West Germany, where her American father — an architect — was stationed. She is the eldest of three children; her mother was an artist. The family relocated to Boulder, Colorado, where Sheryl grew up and attended Fairview High School, graduating in 1985. As a child, she trained extensively in dance and harboured ambitions of becoming a professional dancer, before recurring knee injuries ended that path and redirected her toward acting.

After high school, she moved to Pasadena, California to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts; she also studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and ultimately at the now-defunct Empty Space Theater in Seattle under director Mark Jenkins. It was in Seattle, while working in theatre, that

she was discovered by David Lynch who spotted a publicity photograph of her from a local stage production and invited her to audition. Lynch had intended to cast a local girl simply to play a dead body; once he saw how Sheryl could act, everything changed. She briefly dated fellow Twin Peaks cast member David Duchovny during 1991–1992. She was married to Jesse Diamond, son of singer Neil Diamond, in 2000; the couple divorced in 2001 and share a son, Elijah, born May 2, 2000. She is also a long-standing PETA activist and environmental advocate.

Career Highlights

  • 1990 — Cast as the corpse of Laura Palmer in David Lynch’s landmark ABC mystery drama Twin Peaks — originally intended as a one-scene appearance — before Lynch recognized her talent and expanded her role to include flashbacks as Laura and a second recurring character, brunette cousin Maddy Ferguson; the image of Lee wrapped in plastic became one of the most iconic images in television history.
  • 1990 — Also appeared in Lynch’s surrealist road film Wild at Heart, starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern, in the same year as Twin Peaks — cementing her creative relationship with Lynch.
  • 1992 — Starred in the Twin Peaks prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, in which she received her greatest screen showcase — a performance praised by critics and described by co-star Grace Zabriskie as an act of total self-sacrifice; earned a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead for the role.
  • 1992–1993 — Starred in the title role of Salome in Oscar Wilde’s Salome on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre, opposite Al Pacino, under the direction of Robert Allan Ackerman — one of the most prestigious Broadway productions of the decade.
  • 1998 — Starred as the vampire Katrina in John Carpenter’s cult horror film Vampires opposite James Woods and Daniel Baldwin; the same year, was named one of UGO.com’s “Top 50 Sexiest Vampires” nearly a decade later (2008) for the role.
  • 2017 — Reprised her roles as both Laura Palmer and the additional character Carrie Page in David Lynch’s critically acclaimed limited series revival Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime — bringing the character full circle and earning widespread new acclaim from a generation of viewers discovering the original series for the first time.
