Gong Li was born on December 31, 1965, in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, the youngest of five children. Her father, Gong Lize, was a professor of economics, and her mother, Zhao Ying, was a teacher. She grew up in Jinan, the capital of Shandong, and developed a passion for the arts, particularly singing, from an early age, though she eventually found her true calling in acting.
